The highly skilled and patterned ajrakh block-printing came to Kutch from Sind 400 years ago when the Muslim Khatris (artisans who apply color to cloth) settled in the village of Dhamadka. Against the dull canvas of the Kutch desert, the rich and bold colors of the textiles are strikingly displayed. The millennia-old tradition of weaving and dyeing textiles originated in the Indus Valley region in the North West of India and is still practiced in abundance today. The cloth is washed in water to remove any finish applied in the mill or workshop. It is then dyed in a cold solution of myrobalan (powdered nut of the harde tree). A resist of lime and gum arabic is printed onto the cloth to define the outline of the design. This is known as rekh. The cloth is finally dyed and washed off.
The Ajrakh Dola Silk saree is a masterpiece of Indian textile artistry, blending two rich traditions into one exquisite garment. The saree combines the intricate beauty of Ajrakh printing with the luxurious allure of Dola Silk weaving. Ajrakh, with its ancient origins in the Sindh region, brings forth geometric patterns and floral motifs, meticulously block-printed using natural dyes in deep hues of blues, reds, greens, and blacks. This intricate printing process creates a mesmerizing tapestry of design on the soft, lightweight Dola Silk fabric. Dola Silk, known for its delicate crinkle and ethereal texture, lends a sense of opulence and grace to the saree. The result is a masterpiece of craftsmanship, where each saree tells a story of tradition, heritage, and timeless elegance. Adorned with these Ajrakh motifs on Dola Silk, the saree becomes not just a garment but a symbol of cultural pride and artistic excellence, perfect for adorning special occasions with its regal presence.
